In the midst of the changes of the late 1980's, Hibtrade, a new company independent from MAHART raised the Hungarian flag on its ships. Hibtrade International Ltd. was established by the Hungarian Foreign Trade Bank and Hungarian International Bank with 51% and 49% shares respectively in 1989. The Budapest based Hibtrade Seacargo Ltd. which managed these ships was a joint venture of Hibtrade and Chemolimpex. First, a new Soviet built ship, the RABROS got listed in the Hungarian register in August, 1989. This was the first ship which became Hungarian property in return for the Soviet state debt towards Hungary. As rumour has it her name came from the beerbar (sorbar) word painted on the shop window where founders negotiated and it could be read as rabros from inside out. Their next ship got a wonderful Hungarian name: SEA CHIEFTAIN. Hungarian crew embarked in December of 1989. She was the largest ship ever under Hungarian flag with her 30.000 tons and 11.000 horse powers. She might have deserved the name of Széchenyi or Baross. In April of 1993 her last Hungarian crew disembarked after she had been sold as ZITA. The third vessel, sister of RABROS was named FRUZHI in September, 1990. By the end of 1993 these two ships were reflagged as well but their crews remained Hungarian for a while. The SUNNY HEATH, their fourth ship sailed under the Hungarian tricolour only with temporary passport, she was sold to Korea as TEA CHON in June, 1991. A fifth ship was planned to be transferred to Hungarian flag as CLAN MEMBER but due to increased registration fees in Hungary this intention has never been realized.
