Porto Re Yard of Danubius Shipyard & Machine Works Co. Ltd., 1906-1911

    In 1905, the Budapest-based Danubius-Schönichen-Hartmann United Shipyard and Machinery Co., Ltd. purchased the Stabilimento Lazarus Shipyard, which was located in Portore, near Fiume. Then in 1906, they bought the German-owned Howaldt Shipyard operating in the formerly separate settlement Bergudi which was later attached to Fiume and having the most modern equipment. At the same time, the name of the Hungarian shipyard was changed, from 1906 to Danubius Hajó-és Gépgyár Rt., then in 1911 its name was changed to Ganz és Társa Danubius Gép-, Waggon- és Hajógyár Rt. that had its headquarters in Budapest, but building sites in Budapest and Fiume as well. That is why denotation Budapest-Fiume often appears in references.
    After the Hungarian royal government strongly supported Hungarian shipbuilding, especially Hungarian naval shipbuilding, it procured the monarch's consent to allow Danubius to take part in the construction of HUSSZÁR-class destroyers and KAIMAN-class torpedo boats. The Navy then accepted the Danubius offer, which was similar in size to that of the Austrian Stabilimento Tecnico in Trieste. Danubius could make this favorable offer also because the 1895:XXXIV. law granted state aid to the Hungarian factory for the construction of sea-going ships.
    Under such circumstances, Danubius - for the first time in the history of Hungarian shipbuilding - received an order for construction of 10 KAIMAN-class torpedo boats and 6 HUSZÁR-class torpedo destroyers. The price of each torpedo boat was 693,100 crowns.
    The torpedo boats first had a name, and then - in accordance with the decree dated November 19, 1913 - from January 1, 1914, a number and after that a letter. The letter meant the factory in which they were built: E = Anglia (England), T = Trieste, M = Monfalcone, F = Fiume. A new decree dated May 21, 1917 abolished the letter sign.

    The following series were built at the Portore Yard of Danubius, then Ganz-Danubius:

    9 units of 250 t. open-sea torpedoboats between 1914-1916,
    7 units of TÁTRA class destroyers between 1912-1917,
    construction of 14 units of 130 t. open-sea mine layers were started in 1917, of these 8 units were completed after the war in the successor state, 6 units were in 45% completed in October 1918, their further fate uknown.
